It is definitely worth swapping over to LED light bulbs at your property. LEDs can cost as little as $5 per bulb, per year, to run!
Are quality LED light bulbs more cost-effective in the long run?
Yes, LED bulbs last 5 to10 times longer than traditional incandescent bulbs and 5 to15 times longer than halogen bulbs. As well as cost savings, this is far better for the environment with less light bulbs ending up in landfill – in 2009, the phasing out of traditional incandescent began for this very reason.
Halogen bulbs are more energy efficient and last longer than traditional incandescent bulbs, however compared to LED bulbs, they don’t last as long and are more expensive to run. When shopping for light bulbs, it can be tempting to purchase the cheaper halogen product, however this will cost more in the long run compared to an LED product.
Energy efficient light bulbs, such as LEDs, use less electricity but still supply the same amount of light. Even in a high-use area, LEDs can cost as little as $5 per bulb, per year, to run!
How do LED light bulbs work and what are the benefits?
Light Emitting Diode (LED) bulbs work by sending electricity (an electric charge) through a solid material, instead of through a filament or vapour (incandescent and fluorescent lighting). This electric charge then moves the electrons rapidly through the solid material producing light. As this process only generates low levels of heat, little electricity is wasted. This low level of heat means the LED bulbs take a long time to wear out – meaning longer periods of time between light bulb changes. Also, LEDs do not suffer from being repeatedly switched on and off (unlike traditional lighting).
As well as being cost-effective, benefits of LED light bulbs are:
-
you get warning – LEDs slowly fade, giving you time to purchase a new bulb (other bulbs burn out in an instant, leaving you in the dark!)
-
safety – LEDs do NOT contain mercury (CFLs or fluorescent bulbs do)
-
dimmable – LEDs can have dimmers to enhance the lighting in a room
-
energy-efficient – LED bulbs give off the same light using less power
-
long-lasting – LEDs can last up to 50,000 hours (incandescent bulbs last around 1,000 to 2,000 hours and CFLs last around 15,000 hours)
If the lights at your property are flickering, please DON'T IGNORE this ... it could be a huge fire risk!
Lights flickering? The wiring could be old, loose or faulty!
If your lights are flickering, please don't ignore this – it could be being caused by bulbs that are loose or by incompatible light switches. Other causes could be an overloaded circuit (you may notice the flickering happens when you turn on a large appliance) or old, faulty or loose wiring (which is a huge fire risk!).
The safest thing for you to do is test whether the light bulb is loose by :
-
turning off the light
-
waiting for the bulb to cool down before touching it
-
checking to make sure the light bulb is screwed in properly or if a bayonet, that it is sitting in the correct locked position
If checking the light bulb does not rectify the problem, please do not try to investigate other causes yourself (e.g. the wiring) as you may end up creating a bigger problem. Trying to fix it yourself could also have disastrous consequences such as :
-
any damage caused by electrical work you have carried out, your insurance provider may not cover
-
incorrect wiring could lead to a fire
-
accidental shock, serious burns or death
If you are experience flickering lights at your property, please don't hesitate to contact us to arrange an urgent time for us to investigate and rectify the cause.
