Power points

Power point installation, upgrades and safety checks

With all the electrical devices and appliances we now have in this modern world, many older residential, commercial and industrial properties do not have enough power points. That being said, even a brand new build may only have one power point in some rooms.

If you do arrange for us to install or replace power points in your home, it also provides a good opportunity for the rest of your power points to be checked to ensure they are in good working order.

Read why you must have a qualified Electrician install or replace power points in your property.

Can anyone install or replace a power point?

If you install or replace a power point yourself, you are breaking the law! You can absolutely purchase the power points yourself, but they must be connected / installed by a licensed Electrician.

Incorrectly installed power points can potentially cause electrocution to you, your family or any other occupants in the property – the effects of an electrical shock can be serious injury or death. The danger may not be immediately apparent after installing the power point, however it may develop over time.

What can happen if I do my own electrical work?

In Queensland, electrical safety inspectors investigate and prosecute unlicensed work.

Aside from being illegal, people who perform unlicensed and DIY electrical work risk contact with electricity, which can have deadly consequences for them as well as for the users or anyone else who comes into contact with the electrical installation or equipment which may accidentally be left in an unsafe state. This danger may not be immediately apparent and often only becomes evident in a fault situation, or may even develop over time.

Major property damage from an electrical fire is also a risk and if it was the result of illegal electrical work, your insurer may refuse the claim.

What are the penalties?

DIY electrical work is regarded as unlicensed electrical work, which is illegal, and has penalties of up to $40,000 for individuals.

A breach that exposes an individual to a risk of death or serious injury or illness attracts a maximum penalty of $600,000 for an individual ($3,000,000 for a corporation) or five years imprisonment.

Are you worried that your current power points may be faulty?

Signs that your current power points may be / or are faulty include :

  • The power point is cracked

  • The power point is warm / hot to touch

  • There is a spark when you pull the plug out of the power point

To keep everyone safe, you need to disconnect all appliances from the power point and DO NOT use it any further.

Are you overloading your power points?

Power points are designed to only supply a certain amount of power. If you run more electronics or appliances than the power point is designed for (and the rated load is exceeded), it should trip the circuit breaker which then turns off the electricity going to that power point (along with any other point points connected to that particular circuit breaker). If your circuit breaker fails to trip, potentially you could receive an electric shock.

When a power point is overloaded, the wires heat up and a fire may start – sadly, it is all too common that lives and possessions are lost due to power point overloads.

Indications that a power point is overloaded are:

  • the power point cover is warm / hot to touch

  • a buzzing sound is coming from the power point

  • a burning smell is coming from the power point (this can mean the plastic around the wires is melting / burning)

  • externally, the power point has a scorch mark

  • a loss of power to that power point

  • lights are flickering or dimming

  • the circuit breaker trips

  • you receive an electrical shock (this can also happen even if you touch the appliance itself)

To prevent overloading your property's power points, we recommend each socket is to only have one device plugged in

and having a qualified Electrician swap out single power points to multi-socket power points.
